Description: Cultivating mathematically capable citizens requires visionary leadership. Posing real problems and building mathematical models to solve them, especially in elementary grades, emphasizes mathematizing. Building from number sense, operation sense launches mathematical modeling. Between problem-posing and model-building, the mathematizing step is overlooked, not even included in the steps. Once a problem is posed and quantities identified, the mathematical model doesn’t build itself. Knowing what situations are typically solved by which operators is essential background knowledge.
