Click here to download the session handout.
Room: Ruby 2
Presenter: Rob Nickerson, ORIGO Education Learning Services Educator
This session models the use of conceptually-based digital games and innovative visual models focused on teaching strategies to learn the basic multiplication number facts to 100. Participants will engage in collegial conversations as they learn how to teach students to think about multiplication and actively engage in hands-on games. A learning outcome will be that multiplication facts can be taught through strategies instead of memorization.
1:25 – 2:10 pm
Be Strategic: Tools for Addition and Subtraction Fluency
Click here to download the session handout.
Room: Ruby 3
Presenter: Rob Nickerson, ORIGO Education Learning Services Educator
Not all students can simply memorize basic facts, therefore, teaching students to develop thinking strategies for learning basic addition and related subtraction facts makes more sense. This session models the use of conceptually-based digital games and innovative visual models. A focus on strategies instead of memorization will be the learning outcome.
2:45 am – 3:30 pm
Encourage ‘Thinkering’ in Problem Solving
Click here to download the session handout.
Room: Diamond 7
Presenter: Rob Nickerson, ORIGO Education Learning Services Educator
Rich, open-ended mathematical tasks are the starting point to encouraging students to think deeply about the mathematics. Encouraging students to reflect on their thinking by creating a ‘thinkering map’ assists students in persevering through the process. Teachers also use the map to monitor student progress and adjustments to instruction.
