Description: Elementary students need experiences with multiple models of fractions to gain a deep understanding of the concept and proficiency with skills, such as finding equivalence and operating. This session will explore which model is most appropriate for each purpose.

Description: Versatile models help teachers to articulate topics across elementary grades. Participants who work with students in grades K–5 will discover practical activities using number lines, dot arrays, and area representations that can be used to teach major ideas involving basic facts, whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and computation strategies with deep conceptual understanding.

Description: Cultivating and maintaining an environment that immerses students in mathematics while honoring and promoting student thinking, is a vital part of helping students appreciate “the magic and mystery of mathematics” and building mathematical proficiency. In this session, participants will explore how to leverage mathematical habits of mind, process skills, and discourse to stimulate student thinking and reasoning.
